We have a day for giving thanks. We have two days for getting deals. Now we have Giving Tuesday. A growing movement that began two years ago, today is a day for charities, businesses, community centers, and students around the world to come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give. The idea is simple; find a way for your family, community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Tell others about it and encourage them to find a way to give.
Locally , there are so many needs – here are just a couple of ways you can think about being involved:
1. Local Food Bank – Food banks like LINK are always in desperate need of donations, but especially in the winter months.
2. Loudoun Transitional Housing program – the Loudoun Transitional Program provides a variety of long-term support services, such as health care, counseling, job assistance and training, financial budgeting and adult education, for homeless women and children. To bridge the transition from crisis or emergency shelter to self-sufficiency and permanent housing, residents may stay on-site in eight efficiency apartments or up to seven households offsite, for up to two years. Volunteers can serve in a variety of ways, not just financially ( serve meals to the families, donating needed items).
3. LAWS – Loudoun Abused Women’s Shelter – LAWS is a private, nonprofit organization that provides help and assistance to adult and child victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse in Loudoun County, Virginia. With the help of our supporters and community, they empower victims of domestic and sexual violence with support, advocacy, and education so that they may live free from fear and danger. All of their services are free and confidential. There are a variety of ways to serve and volunteer.
Take the time to give back this holiday season! My family is currently collecting scarves, hats and gloves for the Share the Warmth drive sponsored by Open Arms Worldwide and Sterling Park Baptist Church for needy children and families in the Sterling Park area. Let me know if you would like to donate any new or gently used items for this drive!
