If you are a fan of classic New England ice cream stands, then you will love Moo Thru in Hillsboro. Their slogan says it all – “real ice cream from real dairy farmers.” A perfect balance of creamy and sweet, it is not too thick or too rich – which means you can eat lots of it! The scoop sizes are generous and since it is located in a stand outside of the Old Stone School, you can grab a cone or a milkshake through the window and enjoy at the picnic tables on the grass. While this is the ice cream of childhood memories, their production team often create new and tantalizing flavors that revolve with seasonal flair. With a welcoming farm style space, the Tipped Cow offers core flavors such as vanilla, mint chocolate chip, and strawberry as well as butter brickle, sweet cream, and blackberry. The cookies and cream flavor offers chocolate oreo cookies with chocolate ice cream. The shop also offers five rotating flavors that change and one dairy free option. Gruto’s Soft Serve
A Loudoun County favorite in Purcelville for nearly 12 years, Gruto’s now has a year round store in Leesburg!. Walking into Gruto’s Soft Serve is like walking into an ice cream party every day of the week. (There is even a siren for first-time customers, so make sure to let them know!) Assorted classic soft serve flavors are transformed into party boats, banana splits, strawberry shortcake sundaes and so many other tasty treats. Scruffy’s Ice Cream Parlor
A sweet staple in downtown Middleburg, Scruffy’s has been serving delicious scoops of ice cream for 30 seasons and counting! Abbotts Frozen Custard
Frozen custard is all about the egg yolks, according to the servers at Abbott’s Frozen Custard in Sterling. The egg gives it a unique, silky texture somewhere between soft serve and hard ice cream. Made from real strawberries and black berry, all of the flavors of custard at Abbotts is hand made at their stands. The peanut butter cup sundae is rich with thick chocolate swirls, chunks and peanut butter. Specialty items like blueberry milkshakes and pints of custard to bring home are notable. Abbott’s makes the custards daily in the store and offers a variety of flavors that changes every day.
